Clean gutters on a house in autumn

How often should you clean your gutters?

Gutters might not be the most glamorous part of your home, but they play a vital role in protecting it. By channelling rainwater away from your roof and foundations, gutters help prevent water damage, damp, and even mould. But they can’t do their job properly if they’re clogged with leaves, moss, or debris.

So, how often should you clean your gutters? A good rule of thumb is twice a year — once in the spring and again in the autumn. These are the times when trees tend to shed the most, and your gutters are most likely to become blocked.

However, the exact frequency depends on your surroundings. If your home is near trees that drop lots of leaves, or if birds are frequent visitors, you might need to check and clean your gutters more often — perhaps every three to four months. Likewise, if you’ve recently experienced a storm or heavy winds, it’s worth giving them a once-over to make sure nothing’s clogged or damaged.

Don’t forget, blocked gutters can lead to overflowing water, which might damage your brickwork, fascias, or even seep into your home. Regular cleaning is a simple way to avoid costly repairs.
